Thank you for your interest in the Holy Spirit Prayer Garden and Columbaria!

What is the Holy Spirit Prayer Garden?

  • The Holy Spirit Prayer Garden is a prayerful and peaceful garden located on the grounds of Holy Spirit Parish in Lubbock, TX.  It offers the faithful and those seeking God a place of prayer and contemplation.  Within the Prayer Garden are also columbaria which provide a reverent place of remembrance for loved ones.

What is a Columbarium?

  • A columbarium is a holding receptacle for the sole purpose of holding cremains (cremated remains of a loved one) contained within an urn.  Columbaria (plural) are divided into niches which hold a single urn or multiple urns depending on the size of the niche and the size of the urn.
  • Holy Spirit will initially have 2 columbaria walls with 239 niches available.  Each niche can hold 2 standard urns. The total dimensions of the height, depth, or width of both urns cannot exceed 11.5 inches.  Further details about urn size and shapes are included in the niche agreement documents.  Please contact the Parish Office before purchasing an urn for your loved one.

Can Catholics be Cremated?

  • YES!  The Church does allow for cremation!  The Rite of Christian Burial, Appendix states:
  • “The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come.  This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition.  The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium.  The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased.”

What does a niche cost?

  • Niches are $4,600.  (Registered parishioners of Holy Spirit are given a $500 discount.) Price includes: a niche that can hold 2 standard sized urns, engraving on a 12 x 12 granite plate covering the niche, inurnment, and upkeep of the columbaria area.  Exact terms are outlined in the niche agreement.
  • A niche can be reserved for 10% down and paid over 6 months.
  • Niche reservation costs as well as total costs are subject to future increases.  Once purchased, the price of a niche and engraving costs will not be subject to change.
